On March 24, Mblaq’s showcase for their sixth mini album ‘Broken’ was held at the Wapop Hall in Children’s Grand Park. A new album in 10 months since ‘Smokey Girl,’ it features 7 of their songs.
The title ‘Be A Man’ is slow R&B about the story of a man who’s about to face a breakup, written by Wheesung. With the subject of ‘breakup,’ the whole album features the story that is connected.
Mblaq started by performing ‘Broken’ and ‘Be A Man,’ and the showcase proceeded with Park Kyung-Lim as the host. When asked how this album differs, G.O said, “We wanted to make an emotional album, so we decided on the subject of ‘breakup.’ We focused on emotions. But the stylist’s office caught on fire, which burned all our costumes for the music video – we expressed the accident in the music video.”
All members except Lee Joon participated in the writing of the songs for the album. Regarding the fact that the title song was by Wheesung, the leader Seungho said, “Since we are coming back in a while, we wanted to present an emotional R&B for the fans.” They are said to have received so many songs from various songwriters.
When asked if they used their own experiences in the writing of the breakup songs, G.O. said, “I need to meet women, but since I wasn’t able to, I came to hallucinate.”
For the comment that the stage performance of ‘Be A Man’ differs from their previous dances, Seungho said, “It’s not easy. We are trying to express the feeling of the song, and we practiced more than we have. We had to adjust our energy accordingly in order to express the breakup.”
In the Q&A segment, G.O.’s delightful attitude kept everyone laughing.
The whole album is filled with breakup songs. But it seems more suitable for fall-are you confident?
G.O. – I worried a lot. It is the season of cherry blossom songs – we wanted all the couples to breakup. (everyone laughed) Rather than be suited for the season, we wanted to show Mblaq’s color.
Seungho – ‘Be A Man’ resonates with me word by word. It is a great song, so I think many people will love this song. I’m confident.
Who was Wheesung’s favorite member during the recording process?
G.O. – He liked everyone, but especially me I think. When we went to Australia together for a concert, I tried to become closer with him and asked him to write a song for us. He was happy with how it turned out.
What is Mblaq’s style? Also, tell us about any episodes you had during the recording process
G.O. – I think what our fans say is the Mblaq’s style. We don’t really think about the popularity – we just do what we want to do. Also, our members actively participate in the writing process. Among 7 tracks, we participated in the writing of 4 tracks. Title song was the toughest one. We wanted to make it perfect, so it was tougher for us. When we were recording, Wheesung came with face pack on – we thought he was an alien. I thought we should follow such attitude – perfect self-control.
What’s the point dance of this song? Does it have a name?
G.O. – We have a dance where we shake off our jackets – it’s called ‘Dust off dance.’
What’s your costume concept?
G.O. – Not traditional, but suits (everyone laughs)
It seems like the whole team has matured
G.O. – We worried if we wouldn’t be able to get appropriate responses. I tried to lose unnecessary weight, and I think my ability as a singer improved through the musical ‘Seopyeonje.’ Other members also improved by starring in musicals and dramas. We will be able to show our improvement through overseas tours as well. We’re going to South America in June, and Europe in September.
It seems like the album tells one story
Seungho – The album in itself is a story. We had better songs, but we made it so that it flows well.
Mir – (Since it’s so good) I cry when I listen to it. I wrote some rap lyrics. Working with G.O. is tough, but he gave me an o.k. right away this time. Wheesung was really nice as well.
Cheongdong – I used to prefer working alone, but this time I faced some challenges, so I worked with ‘Cheongdam Super.’ I think I’ll keep working with him.
G.O. – I worked with ‘Avengers’ and ‘Radio Galaxy.’ I did everything I wanted to do.
So Lee Joon didn’t get to participate?
Lee Joon – Instead, I tried my best in the recording process. I thought I’d better improve.
G.O. – Lee Joon is busy
Lee Joon – By the way, my mother composes songs for schools, and she wants to write a song for us. She’s practicing how to use effects.
Seungho – I’ve never heard about this. I knew she played piano.
Lee Joon – She received numerous recognitions. She’s working on our song currently.
You guys have a great teamwork. What is your best features?
Mir – We’re too honest.
Cheondong – We have great humor.
Seungho – We have good age differences. It’s great for the teamwork. I’m four years older than Mir, so he respects me.
G.O. – I think we have similar tastes.
Lee Joon – We value our families. When we go overseas everyone misses home. We live for our families.
Mblaq filled the showcase with witty comments. Having successfully finished the showcase, they will go on a full promotion for the album.
